Five minutes later, she and I were out on a walk. Back in her room, I couldnât stop being conscious of the fact we were alone together and couldnât talk to Shirakawa-san normally as a result, so Iâd invited her outside.
âSo I guess youâre the earnest type,â she suddenly muttered as we strolled around the outside of her house.
I looked at her face, trying to pick up on her feelings. I didnât see any hint of disillusionment or scorn, so I felt relieved for the time being. If I had to deal not only with my regret over passing up my chance to have sex but also with my girlfriendâs chilly glares, that would be a hell of a string of bad luck.
âI donât think Iâve ever had a boyfriend like you before...â Once again, Shirakawa-san muttered things as if she were talking to herself.
âDo you mean that in a bad way?â I asked timidly after a momentâs pause.
âNah.â She looked at me and shook her head. âI was just thinking there are guys like that too, huh?â
That smile of hers was lovely even in the darkness of the evening. Looking at her now, I felt like my decision earlier hadnât been the wrong one. Not that I hadnât been crazy about the idea of doing it, of course...
âUm... Shirakawa-san? To be honest, I, uh...â I figured sheâd eventually find out even if I kept quiet about it, so I decided to level with her. âIâve never...dated anyone before.â
Shirakawa-san opened her eyes just a little wider at my words. Perhaps she really hadnât ever dated someone like me.
I continued speaking. âI donât have any good friends that are girls, and itâs definitely not like Iâd...go to someone else if you didnât let me do it or anything. So...â Given the subject matter and the fact we were outside, I ended up speaking quietly. âIn the future, if we end up doing such things, Iâd like you to actually think you want to do it with me, you know...?â
Maybe sheâd laugh at the open display of my virginity, but I wanted us to be a couple who made out because we loved each other from the bottom of our hearts and were in a long-lasting relationship. Iâd always dreamed of getting to that point with a girl I loved, wishing for it with all my heart.
Earlier, Iâd almost lost control, but I felt like it was for the best that Iâd stopped myself.
âAt the very least, Iâd like you not to think of it as a duty or anything like that,â I added.
I was able to say it at lastâthe thing I hadnât managed to properly tell her back in the room.
âOh, I see. So that was why,â Shirakawa-san said at last, her eyes on me. Her face looked much better now, indicating her pent-up feelings had been cleared away.
âS-Sorry...â I stuttered. âYou were going out of your way...for my sake and all...â
âDonât worry about it. I get now what youâre thinking,â she replied with good humor and faced forward.
